In revolutionary times, how are the ancient practices of ritual and rhythm key components of our resistance to oppressive regimes?

Drum and dance have been ingredients of spiritual nourishment for cultural uprising since as far back as the first human civilizations. We each vibrate to the rhythm of our mother’s blood  before we are even born to this Earth and the beat of our heart keeps the compass of our melodic contribution to the symphony of Life. Ritual, Rhythm, and Revolution is a four-week course for reclaiming and resourcing from that primal heartbeat through ceremonial drumming and movement.

The collective awakening in humanity is hungry for practices that reroot us into ancient ways so familiar to our bones yet so far from modern reality. This course is an offering and response to that shared ache for visionary tools from the tribal body to support the resistance efforts of our times. That we may be fortified. That we may be guided. That we may be rooted as we rise up together towards a more soulful future.

Reclaiming rhythmic intelligence is a key pathway to our cultural homecoming–aligning us to the cyclical nature of the cosmos, to the beating of our hearts, to the music of the forest, and the visionary magic in a communal body.

We will journey through four doors of drum and ritual

  • Week 1 | Devotion

  • Week 2 | Grief

  • Week 3 | War

  • Week 4 | Eros

Each Sunday at 13:00 Eastern we meet live on zoom  (recordings available after) where we will learn specific rhythms for the archetypal body of that week and engage in psycho-somatic healing rituals to clarify our consciousness and unify us to the primordial forces.

All participants will have the opportunity to engage in personal reclamation, drop into primal expression, and join a cross-cultural tribal body in modern times.

In this course you will learn concrete rhythms and expressive exercises to help cultivate both technical skill and improvisational artistry.

I AM IN

In this course you will be diving into:

We will be using the West African djembe drum which hails from the ancient Malinke empire now encompassing countries such as Senegal, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Ghana, and Mali. This drum and many of its ancestors was originally used for cross-tribe communication and eventually in all rituals and celebrations of daily life.

Below are recommendations for where to source a drum if you do not find a local connection:

Wula Drum Djembe (USA)
Motherland Music (USA)

Djembe Mafia (EU)
Djoliba (EU)

Participants are also welcome to purchase a second-hand drum if possible in their area.
